BASIC PURPOSE

Reporting to the Recreation Site Coordinator, the Recreation Aide I/II/III are responsible for assisting in the implementation of the day camp programs and will work at one of three elementary schools within the North Thurston School Public District. These positions will work 20-40 hours per week from approximately the end of June to the middle of August, with additional hours for program planning/setup, and staff training. Summer Day Camp: We offer a fun and safe day camp experience for youth, ages 6 to 12, during the summer and over school breaks. Weekly camps are theme-oriented and packed with creative and healthy outdoor activities, including field trips, swimming, sports, group games, arts and crafts, special guests, and events. Playground Pals: This program is offered in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program. Children ages 6 to 12 can come for lunch and then stay for Playground Pals. On site staff provide structured play and craft activities, along with special guests and events. Applicants will be considered by level of experience: Recreation Aide I $16.84 - $17.80 Hourly Recreation Aide II $18.25 - $19.48 Hourly Recreation Aide III $19.42 - $20.73 Hourly Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Recreation Aide I/II/III duties include, but are not limited to: Provides stimulating activities in a safe, positive, fun and challenging environment for children ages 6-12 years. Plans, delivers, and evaluates age-appropriate activities to assigned groups of children under the direction of the Recreation Site Coordinator and will work independently and as a team player.

Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, meetings, and related job sites. Must possess a valid Food Handler’s certification, OR the ability to obtain before the program begins. Must possess valid First Aid and CPR certifications, OR the ability to obtain before the program begins. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Various sports, games, arts and crafts, and cooperative group activities. First Aid and the procedures for bloodborne pathogens. Skill in: Working with children in a caring and patient manner. Taking the time to ensure that messages are easily understood. Dressing appropriately and clean, as a result the City and Parks, Culture and Recreation profession are portrayed in a positive, "service" related manner. Ability to: Effectively interact with the public and City staff in a courteous manner at all times. Communicate effectively and in an engaging manner, both orally and in writing. Assist with planning, scheduling, developing, and coordinating recreational and/or educational programs for children ages 6-12 in a school, camp or recreational setting. Work in a team setting. In addition to the above, Recreation Aide III require the knowledge of conflict management/resolution, including parent/child relationships. Part-time positions that work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt). Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages. *Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions, working less than than an average of 20 hours per week, are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
