Position Overview We are seeking dependable, detail-oriented individuals to join our Utility Services team as
Meter Readers . This is a
100% outdoor, physically active role that involves extensive walking and driving a golf cart to accurately read water meters throughout assigned routes in The Villages community.
This position is ideal for candidates with a strong work ethic, excellent attendance, and an interest in building a
long-term career in utilities or field operations.
Key Responsibilities - Accurately read and record water meter readings on assigned routes
- Install or assist with meter and meter box installations
- Inspect meters and connections for defects, leaks, or damage and report irregularities to the Lead
- Repair minor leaks and broken lines as assigned
- Identify and report hazardous or difficult-to-access meter locations
- Recheck readings when customer complaints indicate potential inaccuracies
- Explain and interpret unusual readings to customers in a professional manner
- Respond to customer inquiries and complaints; refer issues as needed
- Turn water meters on and off
- Perform related utility work such as valve turning, water line flushing, painting, and water sample collection
- Document safety hazards (broken lids, damaged boxes, fogged lenses, removed meter heads, etc.)
- Follow all district safety policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications - Valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record
- Basic computer skills, including use of mobile applications
- Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook
- Ability to work independently and reliably
- Familiarity with The Villages community geography (or ability to learn routes quickly)
Preferred Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements - 100% outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Extensive walking and repeated entry/exit from vehicles or golf carts
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting
- Ability to lift meter covers weighing up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 55 lbs occasionally
- Exposure to airborne particles, noxious gases, pathogens, and chemicals (PPE required)
- Ability to clearly see meter dials and colors, hear and communicate with customers and coworkers, and maintain balance on uneven or slippery surfaces
