The Fire Protection Engineer will support the facilities design, construction, and renovation projects by providing their professional expertise. Responsibilities include coordinating with project managers and other personnel/contractors, assisting in the development of reports and studies, collaborating with multi-disciplined teams, understanding and implementing standards as outlined in the Program of Requirements (POR), managing design of projects from programming to post-occupancy, reviewing proposal documents and design reviews for accuracy and compliance, reviewing architectural, electrical, and mechanical floor plans using NFPA and IBC codes and standards, possessing knowledge of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) especially Means of Egress Systems and Components, reviewing vendor shop drawings and equipment submittals for sprinkler and fire alarm systems for compliance with NFPA 13 and NFPA 72, reviewing sprinkler system hydraulic calculations and fire pump performance curves, suggesting equivalent levels of protection when strict code compliance cannot be achieved, inspecting facilities for deficiencies related to Means of Egress, Sprinkler Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, Emergency Lighting, Electrical Arrangements, Fire Rated Partitions, Storage Arrangements, acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in design and construction meetings, attending site surveys and making recommendations regarding Life Safety code requirements, testing Fire and Life Safety Systems during Substantial Completion Inspections, and providing on-site field survey measurements and verification. Requirements include an active and maintained Secret Federal or DoD security clearance with the ability to upgrade and maintain a Top Secret clearance, a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering, and four years of experience in commercial/government office building design and construction. Proficiency in AutoCAD is required. Experience in both Fire Protection and Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
